EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Missouri women's basketball team overcame an 11-point second half deficit to record a 69-63 victory over host Northwestern in the DoubleTree White Invitational Sunday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. The win improves Mizzou's record to 2-4 while Northwestern falls to 2-4.
Down 59-48 with 8:56 left in the contest, the Tigers came storming back with an 11-0 run, including five consecutive points by senior Alyssa Hollins, for a 59-59 after a layup from Jones with 4:55 on the clock.
A free throw from junior Jessra Johnson at the 2:50 mark gave the Tigers the lead, 60-59 and Johnson then sank a long jumper as the shot clock expired for a three-point Mizzou advantage, 62-59, with 2:14 remaining in the contest. Northwestern responded with a basket but sophomore Jasmyn Otote nailed a three-pointer with 1:32 left to give the Tigers a 65-61 lead.
Northwestern got a basket from Amy Jaeschke to get within two, 65-63, at the 1:05 mark but the Tigers used two free throws apiece from junior Toy Richbow and Hollins to secure the 69-63 victory.
Johnson led Missouri with 19 points and nine rebounds and Hollins scored 10.
The Tigers started strong with a layup from redshirt freshman Bekah Mills off an assist from sophomore RaeShara Brown 26 seconds into the game and ran off to an 11-5 lead, capped by a three-pointer from Mills, with 15:47 left.
A free throw from Amy Jaeschke tied to contest at 22-22 with 8:47 on the clock and the Wildcats took a two-point lead, 24-22, off two more free throws from Maggie Mocchi, 30 seconds later.
Mizzou got within one, 30-29, when Mills hit a layup with 3:19 remaining but the Wildcats kept up their offensive pressure and took a 36-31 lead into halftime.
After the Tigers scored the first four points of the second half, a reverse layup from Brown with 18:36 on the clock tied the game up at 37-37. A 10-4 run by Northwestern gave the host team a 47-41 lead at the 14:39 mark and a two free throws from Kristin Cartwright with 8:56 on the clock put the Wildcats on top by 11, 59-48.
The Tigers return to Mizzou Arena for a 6:30 p.m. contest against Toledo on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Mizzou then faces off at home against Bradley on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in a game televised on the Mizzou Sports Network.
