COLUMBIA, Mo. – Juniors Michael Chadwick and Katharine Ross each earned two event wins Friday as the Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened competition against Kentucky, Northwestern and Southern Illinois in a two-day quad dual at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. Chadwick won the 100 free in a nation-leading time and placed first in the 200 IM, while Ross claimed first in both the 200 IM and 100 breast.
After one day of action, the Tiger men lead both Northwestern and Southern Illinois, 128-35, and are ahead of Kentucky, 110-53. On the women's side, the Tigers have a 117-46 edge over SIU and a 113-50 lead over Kentucky.
Both Tiger teams opened the meet with wins in the 200 free relay. On the women's side, Mizzou's A team of senior Anna Patterson, sophomore Rachel Hayden, freshman Maddie Gehrke and sophomore Hannah Stevens clocked a time of 1:34.21 for first, while the men's quartet of Chadwick, senior Matthew Margritier, junior Fabian Schwingenschlogl and freshman Mikel Schreuders touched first in 1:21.42.
Ross won her first event of the day in the 200 IM after notching a time of 2:02.58, ahead of senior Abby Duncan in third (2:03.42) and junior Nadine Laemmler in fourth (2:03.85).
Chadwick also claimed first-place honors in the 200 IM, besting the field in 1:50.53. Senior Daniel Graviss took second in 1:50.70, while Schwingenschlogl finished third in 1:51.04.
In the women's 100 breast, Ross again claimed top honors after a swim of 1:00.53, barely ahead of Duncan's time of 1:00.54. Senior Miranda Mercke completed the one-two-three Tiger sweep after a time of 1:04.54.
Mizzou swept the top four places in the men's 100 breast, led by Schwingenschogl's 54.40. Behind him were junior Eddie Mapel (54.97), freshman Jordan O'Brien (56.53) and sophomore Jordy Groters (56.85).
Junior Carter Griffin gave Mizzou a win in the 200 back after a season best swim of 1:47.14. A pair of Tiger freshman took second and third, as Alex Walton finished in 1:48.54 for second and Anthony Ashley touched in 1:49.39 for third.
Chadwick's nation-leading time of 43.01 in the 100 free gave the junior his second event win of the day, while Groters and Schreuders both clocked times of 46.16 to tie for fourth.
Hayden gave Missouri a 100 free sweep with a win in the women's race. The sophomore touched the wall in 51.21, while Patterson was third in 51.81, junior Victoria Trost fourth in 52.11 and freshman Aurore Jacolin fifth in 52.25.
Sophomore Sharli Brady won Mizzou's fourth women's individual event of the evening in the 200 fly after swimming a 1:59.39. Classmate Erin Metzger-Seymour was third in 2:03.55.
In the diving well, senior Clark Thomas easily won the 1-meter competition with a score of 358.25.
The Tigers closed day one action with a sweep of the 400 medley relay races. The women's A squad of Stevens, Duncan, Brady and Patterson clocked a time of 3:42.08 for first, while the men's team of Griffin, Mapel, Sansoucie and Schreuders were first in 3:18.51.
Day two action between Mizzou, Kentucky, Northwestern and Southern Illinois continues on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
