COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou men's and women's swimming and diving teams both suffered close losses to Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference opener Thursday afternoon at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The Tiger men fell 164-136, while the Mizzou women lost 176-124.
The Tigers won a combined 13 events on the day, including two apiece from redshirt senior Abby Duncan (Champlin, Minn.) and junior Michael Chadwick (Charlotte, N.C). Duncan, who entered the meet as the nation's leader in the 100 breast, won that event, as well as the 200 breast. Her time in the longer event was good enough to rank second nationally. Chadwick swept both the 50 free and 100 free races, both in season best times.
Mizzou opened the meet with victories in both the men's and women's 200 medley relays. The women's team led throughout to touch the wall first in 1:40.66. On the men's side, Chadwick erased the Tigers' deficit on the final leg as Mizzou's team of Carter Griffin (Parker, Colo.), Fabian Schwingenschlogl (Nuremberg, Germany), Andrew Sansoucie (Wentzville, Mo.) and Chadwick pulled out a 1:28.23 to 1:29.24 win over the Vols.
Duncan claimed the first of her two wins in the 100 breast in a time of 1:01.22, outlasting junior Katharine Ross (Des Moines, Iowa), who was second in 1:01.15. Schwingenschlogl touched second on the men's side in 54.19, while junior Eddie Mapel (Hinsdale, Ill.) was fourth in 56.42.
The 200 breast saw Mizzou winners on the men's and women's side. Duncan was victorious with a time of 2:13.07, again besting Ross, who took second in 2:16.18. In the men's race, Schwingenschlogl cruised to a win after a swim of 1:59.34, while Mapel was third in 2:03.95.
A perfect back half gave sophomore Sharli Brady (Burlington, Ky.) the win in the 200 fly in a time of 1:59.05. Daniel Graviss (Houston, Texas) placed second on the men's side after a swim of 1:49.18.
Chadwick started his individual day with a 50 free win in 20.09, ahead of Sansoucie's third-place time of 20.81. Chadwick then beat the rest of the 100 free field by almost a full two seconds after his 43.48. Freshman Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) was third in 45.82.
Sansoucie nabbed an event win of his own in the 100 fly, beating the field after a swim of 48.89.
Mizzou swept both 1-meter competitions in the diving well. Senior Clark Thomas (Olathe, Kan.) won the men's contest with a score of 369.15, while sophomore Alexa Beckwith (Denver, Colo.) was victorious over the women with a tally of 270.30. Men's freshman Kyle Goodwin's (Aurora, Colo.) third-place score of 332.62 ranks him eighth all-time at Mizzou on the board, while women's sophomore Kendra Kieser (Plano, Texas) was second after a score of 258.45.
Kieser won an event of her own with a victory on 3-meter, totaling 318.45 points, good enough for eighth on Mizzou's record list. Thomas was second in the men's 3-meter with a score of 376.65, while Goodwin took third with 341.10 points.
Junior Nadine Laemmler (Wackersdorf, Bavaria, Germany) had finishes of first in the 200 back and second in the 100 back on the day. Her swim of 1:57.38 in the 200 back ranks her seventh all-time at Mizzou, while she swam a 54.93 in the 100 back, good enough for ninth in program history.
Griffin and freshman Alex Walton (Wilton, Iowa) posted a pair of second and third-place finishes in the men's backstroke events. Griffin went 49.67 to Walton's 50.50 in the 100 back, while the duo swam times of 1:48.63 and 1:49.44, respectively, in the 200 back.
The Mizzou men went two-three-four to close out individual action in the 200 IM, led by Schwingenschlogl's 1:50.73. Graviss was third in 1:50.76 and Walton fourth in 1:53.24. On the women's side, Ross placed second in the race after a time of 2:04.21.
In the women's 1000 free, Kira Zubar (Chaska, Minn.) took second after a swim of 10:08.58, a time that moved her into fifth all-time in Mizzou history.
The Mizzou women return to action Friday, Oct. 16-Saturday, Oct. 17 with the two-day SMU Classic in Lewisville, Texas. Competition both days begins at 6:30 p.m.
