COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Tigers opened their 2014 season on Friday with the Missouri Opener held at home in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse. The team ended the evening's events with 12 individual wins, including five from freshmen in their first meet on the track donning the black and gold.
“It served its purpose. It broke the ice for the season,” Head Coach Brett Halter said. “You always take a few steps back in January before you get rolling again and find that rhythm going into February. I think today was a terrific start.”
The first win of the day for the Tigers came from senior Katie Evans, who came back from a PR performance in the shot put at the Dec. 7 Holiday Open at Iowa State to win the weight throw during Friday's competition. Teammate Jill Rushin also came away with a win, leading the shot put with a toss of 16.14m (52-11.5).
The pair of sophomore 60m dash Missouri School Record holders defended their home track, as Markesh Woodson and Chelsie Stevens both placed 1st in their respective events. Woodson finished in 6.69, within sight of his 6.60 record, while Stevens finished in 7.75.
Other event wins include freshman Ben Goodman in the 1,000m, sophomore Chandler Dye in the mile, freshman Tim Johnson in the 3,000m, senior Camille Hayes in the high jump, sophomore Jacqueline Obi in the 200m, freshman Sydney Wells in the 400m, senior Landon Wachter in the 600m, freshman Kayla Wolf in the 1,000m, and freshman Teylar Adelsberger in the mile.
