Stafford Finishes First in 200 Free

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior Shara Stafford won the Big 12 title in the 200 free to highlight day three action at the 2012 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships Friday evening at the Mizzou Aquatic Center. The Tigers ended Friday action in third place with 451 points heading into the final day.

In one of the most exciting races of the night, Stafford earned the Big 12 title in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.13 for Mizzou's first-ever win in the event. Stafford swam past three-time defending champion Karlee Bispo of Texas to claim the win.

In the opening event of the session, the team of Dominique Bouchard, Emy DiBenigno, Shara Stafford and Lisa Nathanson placed third in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:36.17.

Mizzou had three top-eight finishers in the 100 breast as Emy DiBenigno, Rachel Ripley and Amanda Masters finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 1:01.78, 1:02.15 and 1:02.25. Additionally, Courtney Rhodenbaugh claimed 10th place with a 1:02.52. All four Tigers clocked NCAA `B' times during the session.

Bouchard claimed fourth place in the 100 back with a time of 53.38, while Cassie Cunningham earned a sixth place finish in 53.90. Brigette Selbert finished fifteenth in the event in 57.54.

The Tiger duo of Tasha Truscott and Lexi Spivak finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 100 fly with times of 55.05 and 55.43.

In the 400 IM, freshman Dani Spradlin finished eighth with a time of 4:25.91 while Nathalia Mello notched a time of 4:35.19 in the same event.

In the diving well senior Jordan Morcom and junior Sharon Finn had impressive showings in the 3 meter, as the pair finished second and third, respectively. Morcom earned her second place showing with a score of 338.05, while Finn was right behind her with a 336.90. Additionally, Christina Gailey finished in ninth place (277.85) and Lauren Callin came in 12th (244.50).

Competition continues Saturday morning with preliminary action at 10 a.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
