Columbia, Mo.- Saturday, Sept. 17 marked a national holiday; it was National Gymnastics Day. The day is celebrated by USA Gymnastics to build awareness of the sport and help support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The Mizzou Gymnastics team spent the day helping to break the world record for most handstands done at one time. The event also helped to raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network.
At noon on Saturday, the Mizzou gymnastics team and young gymnasts from around the Columbia region, kicked up to a handstand. Over 100 Organizations all over the country participated in the event, with over 20,478 gymnasts kicking their feet up at the same time. The previous handstand record was set by Australian gymnasts in Melbourne, Australia to promote the 2005 World Gymnastics Championships.
"It was pretty cool stuff," Senior Allie Heizelman said. "With everyone combined, we beat the record for most people in a simultaneous handstand at once."
