Alex Gold Nominated for AAI Award

Feb. 22, 2011

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Senior gymnast Alex Gold has been chosen as one of the top 16 finalists nationally for the 2011 AAI Award. The award, distributed by American Athletic, Inc., is presented to recognized outstanding athletes competing for championships at all levels.

Gold is one of two gymnasts in the Big 12 Conference who are among the top 16 finalists. The top 16 will be narrowed to the top six finalists after Friday, Feb. 25. From there the top female athlete will be chosen by coaches around the nation.

As the only senior on the Missouri Gymnastics team, Gold exhibits great leadership for her younger teammates. She is studying as a nursing major, therefore Gold has the challenge of balancing a rigorous educational schedule as well as a grueling practice schedule.

"We are honored to have a gymnast the caliber of Alex," Head Coach Rob Drass said. "We are excited for her nomination and wish her the best."

A strong competitor, Gold boasts career high scores of 9.925 and 9.725 on vault and bars. She holds a career-high 9.800 on beam and 9.850 on floor, as well as a 38.875 personal-best all-around score.
