LOS ANGELES – North Carolina scored 11 runs in a key three-inning stretch Sunday afternoon to register an 11-3 win over Mizzou in the Tigers' final game of the USC Tournament at Dedeaux Field.

Mizzou drew first blood in the top of the second. With junior 2B Conner Mach (Chesterfield, Mo. / Parkway West) aboard with a leadoff double and sophomore RF Blake Brown (Normal, Ill. / West) hit by a pitch, junior C Ben Turner (St. Charles, Mo. / Westminster Christian) flared a one-out single to right in his first at-bat of the season to drive in Mach.

Senior LHP Zack Hardoin (Spring, Texas / Klein Collins HS / Blinn JC) cruised through the first three innings. He walked Ben Bunting to start the game, but Turner caught him stealing later in the inning. He faced the minimum nine batters through three innings, and had six strikeouts through five.

The Tigers added a run in the sixth when sophomore 1B Dane Opel (Edwardsville, Ill. / Edwardsville) doubled in sophomore SS Eric Garcia (Pflugerville, Texas / Hendrickson). UNC sent RHP Andrew Smith (1-0) in to relieve lefty starter Kent Emanuel, and then promptly issued a walk. Yet the Tarheels got out of the inning when Mach was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch, and Opel was doubled up trying to score on a flyout to right.

That turned the tide in favor of the 'Heels, whose first four batters reached base in the bottom of the sixth. The last of those was a bases-clearing double off of senior RHP Brad Buehler (Festus, Mo. / St. Pius X), who came on in relief of Hardoin (0-1). North Carolina (3-0) added six runs on five hits – including a two-run homer by Jesse Wierzbicki – and a walk to break the game open. Seth Baldwin added a two-run homer in the eighth for an 11-2 UNC lead.

The Tigers (1-2) were able to score a run without the benefit of a hit, thanks to two walks and two batters hit. Mizzou resumes play next weekend for a four-game series (Friday, Saturday doubleheader, Sunday) at Charlotte.
