LINCOLN, Neb. - The Mizzou track and field program completed action at the Adidas Classic in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday (Jan. 22) and saw both its men's and women's teams place fourth overall with 68.5 and 57 points, respectively. In all, the Tigers claimed three event titles on the day as it competed alongside some of the nation's elite competition. Senior Brian Hancock (Monroe City, Mo.), sophomore Bailey Belvis (Prosper, Texas) and senior Chris Holly (Topeka, Kan.) all claimed event titles on the day for the Tigers. Nebraska won both the men's and women's team competitions.
Belvis was the Tigers' first big winner on the day as she claimed the title in the women's mile run after clocking in at 4:56.95, nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Katherine Ward of Air Force. Her time in the event is a new personal-best and the second-best time run by a Tiger this season. Layne Moore (Emporia, Kan.) kept things going in the middle distance events for the Tigers as she took third overall in the 800m run at 2:12.64.
Leslie Farmer (Jefferson City, Mo.) was the Tigers' top sprinter on the day as she placed fourth overall in the 400m dash with a time of 57.49. Lana Mims (Tulsa, Okla.) also had a nice performance in the sprints as she took fifth overall in the 200m dash after clocking in at 25.05; she and Farmer combined to score six points in the team competition. The women's 4x400m relay team, comprised of Farmer, Mims, Moore and Landon Wachter (Jackson, Mo.) took second overall as well, clocking in at 3:52.14 to round out a good day for the sprinters.
The women also earned big team points in the weight throw as Mizzou placed three throwers in the top six, highlighted by freshman Kearsten Peoples (Ottawa, Kan.), who placed third at 17.50m (57-5). Melissa Coil (Clark, Mo.) and Megan Collins (Lee's Summit, Mo.) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with marks of 17.17m (56-4) and 17.02m (55-10 ¼). The trio earned the Tiger women nine points in the team competition.
Peoples and sophomore Katie Evans (Powersville, Mo.) came back to score six points for the women in the shot put as they placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Peoples tossed 14.73m (48-4) while Evans measured in at 14.65m (48-0 ¾). In all, the Tiger women scored 15 team points in the throws.
In the jump events, Mims and Erika Miller (Mexico, Mo.) each scored in the long jump while Stacy Swineburg (Camdenton, Mo.) and Camille Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) each scored in the high jump, collecting 11 points in the two events. Swineburg and Hayes tied for fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.65m (5-5) while Mims was the Tigers' top placer in the long jump after turning in a top leap of 5.67m (18-7 ¼) on her final attempt. Miller took sixth in the long jump at 5.24m (17-2 ¼).
On the men's side, Holly was the first big event winner for the Tigers as he claimed the weight throw title with a personal-best toss of 18.69m (61-4) on his first attempt. That throw marks the third straight meet that he has either matched or reset his personal-best in the event. Tim Opfer (Higginsville, Mo.) and Jacob Bullinger (Jackson, Mo.) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the event as they helped Mizzou score 13 points in the event.
Hancock also had a great meet as he improved his season-best mark in the pole vault after clearing 5.25m (17-2 ¾) to win the event, good for his second event title of the season. Hancock also improved his season-best mark in the event, which was 5.20m (17-0 ¼) heading into the meet.
Corey Jones (Boonville, Mo.), Brooks Mosier (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and Lars Rise (Trondheim, Norway) scored in the men's shot put as Jones led the way with a third-place nod after throwing 16.90m (55-5 ½). Mosier was fourth at 16.79m (55-1) while Rise, a combined event specialist, tied for sixth at 16.62m (54-6 ½). The trio accounted for 10.5 total points for the men.
In the sprints, freshman Tre Chambers (Colorado Springs, Colo.) kept his fine season going by placing third in the men's 60m dash with a time of 6.99. He also clocked a time of 6.90 in the preliminary heat of that race. Newcomer Mark Hughes (Center, Mo.) was another sprinter to have a nice performance as he placed fifth with a time of 48.99.
Defending Big 12 outdoor 800m champion Blake Irwin (Bettendorf, Iowa) kept things going on the track in the middle distance events as he took second in the men's 800m run with a time of 1:52.43, just one-hundredth of a second off of first place Doug Kelley of Houston. 1,000m standout Aaron Dixon (Lee's Summit, Mo.) also had a fine showing in the 1,000m run as he placed third with a time of 2:27.25.
Tucker Bounds (Columbia, Mo.) scored in the jump events for the Tiger men after placing sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.84m (22-5 ¼). Freshman Jeremy Lampley (Ballwin, Mo.) was the Tigers' top finisher in the triple jump as he came in fourth after jumping 13.86m (45-5 ¾).
