Columbia, Mo., - The 10th-ranked Missouri softball team recorded 26 hits in its two games against instate opponent Missouri S&T, sweeping the Lady Miners, 10-2 in five innings of game one and 6-0, in game two of the evening doubleheader. Senior Stacy Delaney (Freeland, Mich.) was credited with the first win of the series and improved to 11-2, while junior lefty Jana Hainey (Peculiar, Mo.) took game two for her eighth win of the campaign. The Tigers closed out the non-conference season at 30-3 while improving to 38-5 on the year and 12-2 on University Field. The two-game sweep is Missouri's ninth of the campaign.
Big 12 Player of the Week Marla Schweisberger (Raytown, Mo.) turned in two impressive outings, averaging .625 on the night with five hits in eight at bats. Credited with scoring three of Missouri's 16 runs, Schweisberger hit the Tigers' first triple in nine games and took a team high seven bases in the doubleheader.
Two Tigers, redshirt junior Gina Schneider (Liberty, Mo.) and senior Lindsey Ubrun (Riverside, Calif.) hit balls out of the park in the fifth inning of game one. Ubrun's solo shot marked her eighth yard ball of the year. Ubrun now stands tied with Megan Christopher (Wright City, Mo.) for most home runs on the season. Both are two bombs shy of joining an elite crowd in the Missouri single season home run record book.
Missouri had to use a come-from-behind effort to manage the game one win. Down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Missouri scored two unearned runs with Ubrun and rightfielder Jaydee Young (Peculiar, Mo.) taking advantage of Lady Miner errors. Schneider broke the tie with her fourth home run of the campaign, a two run blast that drove in leadoff batter Rhea Taylor (Buford, Ga.) from second base.
The Tigers were a perfect 7-of-7 in stolen bases with sophomore Abby Vock (Morrison, Ill.) and Taylor managing 2-of-2 performances in their turns around the bases. Taylor now has 25 stolen bases on the season and is one bag away from moving into 10th on the single season stolen base record book.
In the circle, Hainey threw a seven inning solo shutout, striking out three and allowing only three hits in her first start since April 1. Hainey, along with Delaney and relief pitcher Kristin Nottelmann (Fenton, Mo.), combined for a 1.08 ERA, allowing only two earned runs in 13 innings while holding the Lady Miners to a .178 average.
Missouri will return to Big 12 play in its weekend series against Texas Tech. The final regular season road test, the Tigers will travel to Lubbock, Texas and begin the first game of the two-game series Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. with game two beginning at Noon on Sunday, April 19.
