Ames, Iowa. - The University of Missouri volleyball team overcame sluggish
play in Games 2 and 3 to defeat the Iowa State Cyclones, 3-0 (30-13, 30-22,
30-26) in Ames, Iowa on Wednesday night. The Tigers improve to 18-6 on the
year and 8-6 in the Big 12 while Iowa State falls to 4-15 overall and 1-13
in the conference. The Tigers would use a 17 kills and nine digs from Lisa
Morris and seven service aces to grab the win, which was career win No. 551
for head Missouri volleyball coach Susan Kreklow.
The Tigers came out on fire in Game One. Morris played a great game putting
down nine of her eight match-high 17 kills and recorded a .533 hitting
percentage while Mizzou registered a .432 mark as a team. The Tigers also
used solid serving registering three service aces en-route to the 19-minute,
30-13 win.
ISU would play the Tigers much tougher in Game 2. The Cyclones would trail
the Tigers by only one at 17-16 to begin the game. However, Mizzou would go
on a 13-6 run the rest of the way, mostly thanks to the solid play of junior
Christi Myers who put down seven kills and two block assists in the game, as
the Tigers took a 30-22 Game 2 win. Myers would go on to register her
seventh double-double of the season putting down 12 kills and picking up 10
digs and recording four block assists.
Iowa State would have a lead for most of Game 3 and for the last time at
20-19. Senior defensive specialist Katie Sowers would them come in a serve
Mizzou to six straight points and give the Tigers a 25-20 lead. The Tigers
were
able to hold off a late charge by ISU and take the game, 30-26 and the
match, 3-0. Sowers had an excellent night in the back row picking up 17 digs
while also slating three service winners.
Head coach Susan Kreklow said that while the win wasn't pretty, the Tigers
were able to keep their composure and focus.
"We played well in Games 1 and 2 and had a momentary lapse of concentration
in Game 3." Kreklow said. "Iowa State showed great hustle Game 3 and kept us
off balance, but we were able to regroup and finish strong."
The Tigers now return home on Saturday to face rival Kansas to Columbia. For
